Hair Ethyl Glucuronide (EtG)
Ethyl Glucuronide (EtG) is a breakdown product unique to alcohol that accumulates in the blood as alcohol levels decline. EtG is a minor metabolite of ethanol (ethyl alcohol). It is formed in vivo as a consequence of alcohol consumption. A small fraction (0.02%) of a dose of alcohol is conjugated in the liver with glucuronic acid to form ethyl glucuronide. Chemicals called fatty acid ethyl esters (FAEEs) appear in the blood within 12 to 18 hours of someone having a drink, but they are eventually stored in the hair.
EtG Uses & Advantages:
- Safety sensitive work settings
- Zero tolerance programs (driving, pregnancy, and other)
- Treatment and monitoring programs
- Forensics
- Detects recent use
- Multiple specimen matrix
EtG testing has increased the ability to detect alcohol use in people by analyzing their urine, blood or hair for the following indicators:
Time Frame | Indicator |
Less than a day | Ethanol in blood and urine |
EtG in blood and urine | |
FAEEs in blood | |
1 - 5 days | EtG in urine |
2 - 3 weeks | PEth in blood |
Months | FAEE and ETG in hair |
